On April 2nd, 2019 at 1113hrs, emergency personnel were dispatched to the area of 4355 State Route 61 in Shamokin Township, Northumberland County, PA for a reported motor vehicle accident with entrapment.
First arriving units found a pickup truck head-on into a telephone with heavy entrapment of a single occupant. Due to limited manpower on responding apparatus, and confirmed heavy entrapment, Rescue 62 was added to the box as a second rescue.
As crews worked to free the driver of the pickup, command requested a helicopter to be put in the air for the patient. It was decided prior to the arrival of the helicopter that the landing zone would be right in the middle of Route 61 just a few hundred yards from the scene of the crash.
After approximately 40 minutes, crews were finally able to free the driver from the wreckage. He was then placed into the back of MICU 172 and transported a short distance down the road to MedEvac 7.
The patient was then flown to Geisinger Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday night.
State police said the vehicle traveled well over 300 yards from the point it left the highway until it crashed into the final telephone pole. The roadway remained closed for well over an hour as crews worked to clear the scene.
